Although it called for two hours' strenuous work by members of the Hikurangi Fire Brigade, a fire near the scenic reserve at Waro yesterday served the good purpose of removing one of the worst hazards in the district. The brigade was called to the outbreak shortly before midday and. when lack of pressure prevented any effective effort being made to extinguish the flames, the gorse and fern was back-burned. When the danger appeared past, the brigade returned to the town. Half-an-hour later another call was received. The fire had flared up in the reserve and 700 ft of hose had to be run out to quell it. The flames endangered near-by houses but these were unharmed and little damage was done to the reserve. Volunteers assisted the firemen in their gruelling hour's work.
