Byrd Expedition Leaves Dominion

3 (Special) WELLINGTON, This Day. 2 Just before the USS Mt Olympus and the other ships of the Antarctic cxpedi--3 tion left for America yesterday, 3 Admiral Byrd presented the Prime i Minister (Mr Fraser) with a set of enlarged Antarctic photos. :1 The photographs include many . beautiful and vivid polar scenes which r had been reproduced with technical ; perfection. While on board the Mt Olympus, just t prior to her sailing, Mr Fraser was i entertained to tea by the admiral and his officers. ’ He saw the husky dogs used by the j expedition and penguins brought back from the Antarctic. At a civic reception in Wellington , yesterday Admiral Byrd said that he ; did not wish to perpetuate his memory by naming a geographical feature after himself. He was replying to a suggestion i made by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr jW. Appleton). On a previous trip the I admiral said he had been alone in the | Antarctic for live months. 1 When ill from monoxide poisoning, without the use of his eyes and not j expecting to survive, he had decided ! that an egotistical desire for fame was a very wrong attitude of mind. j He had already named one geo- j graphical feature after his mother, he I added. ; j AT LEAST ONE MARRLVGE I 1 During the civic reception yestcr- j day to members of the American Antarctic task force, the American Minister (Mr Avra Warren) commented on j the use made of the registry office ! while the American armed forces were lin New Zealand, and added that it had also been of use during the short I stay of the task force. Inquiries made later revealed that at ; least one of the sailors witti the force! had married a New Zealand girl during ins short stay in Wellington. ;
