Slight Rain But No Relief From Drought

Light rain fell in Whangarei during the night, but it was scarcely sufficient to dampen the surface of the ground The gauge registered .Olin. which, with .02in recorded during the previous 24 hours, brings the total fall for the month to .03in. Steady rain is required to relieve the drought conditions and benefit pastures and gardens. Cloudy weather to day and an easterly wind give some promise of further rain during the week-end. A light shower fell shortly after 9'oclock this morning. Predicted to reach New Zealand yesterday, the cyclonic storm travelled at a slower speed than expected from Norfolk Island and last evening was moving in a south-westerly direction. By 6 a.m. tomorrow it is expected to be between 300 and 400 miles west ot the Northland peninsula and then to move in a south-easterly direction towards the South Island on Sunday night. Warned, of the impending cyclone, seme Whangarei residents look precautions yesterday. One householder nailed up windows while others'collected ripe fruit.

So far there is little evidence of the approaching storm, which might now miss Northland.
