Pier Fire Delays Queen Elizabeth
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Mar. 7. The departure of the liner Queen Elizabeth from New York was delayed 90 minutes by a fire in the vessel John Ericsson, which was berthed at the other side of the same pier. It was at first thought it would be necessary to move the Queen Elizabeth into open water, but, although engulfed in heavy smoke, passengers continued to embark. The French liner Normandie was destroyed by fire in 1942 at the same pier.
