Dem. Provisions For Greek Support
ATHENS, Mar. 7,
It is reported that the United States economic mission in Greece will recommend American assistance amounting to £25,000,000 to enable Greece to import food this year.
■Well-informed British sources stated that this would be the absolute minimum to meet Greece’s food requirements, representing a basic food ration of 2250 calories a day. A New York message states that the Democrat minority of the Senate has indicated its readiness to approve, almost cn bloc, financial and other aid to Greece, but with two distinct reservations, according to the New York Times correspondent in Washington. The reservations are that such aid is not to be used to further British policies in the Mediterranean and that the assistance should not be employed to support a Greek monarchy.
The decisions were reached at a caucus meeting at which opposition was expressed to the use of American money to maintain British forces in Greece and to the sending of American troops to that country to replace British contingents.
