WATER MAINS BURST
However, the main feeding the accommodation house with its own supply, and which has been drawn on by other Kerikeri residents during the present near, drought, had burst. The flames quickly leaped to the detached villa, and all that could be saved was a garage. Mrs Tyree was away. Mr Tyree and the lady help removed what personal effects they could, but, like the guests were heavy losei-s. Valuable jewellery, was lost, as was some property belonging to Mrs Voelckner stowed under the house. The fire is believed to have started
in the washhouse, where rats had been prevalent. Shropshire Farm accommodation had been fully booked for Easter and many months ahead. It was the first home for many Kerikeri people awaiting erection of their own houses, and its loss will be a serious blow to Kerikeri and to Northland.
