Shipbuilders Want Waipoua Cratrolled
(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. Control of Waipoua Forest by the State Forest Department was the only method by which a sustained yield of timber could be assured.
This decision was made by representatives of the ship-building trade when they met in Auckland yesterday. While they were eager to have the Waipoua Forest preserved for scenic and botanical purposes, they expressed the opinion that conservation must be properly carried out. They said that there was already a shortage of kauri for ship-building, substitutes from overseas were unprocurable and. with the curtailment of the industry during the war, the future demand for the timber was expected to be greater than ever. It was stated that Waipoua provides three-lfths of the available millable kauri in the Dominion.
A special committee of the Auckland Ship and Doat-builders" Association was set up to consider the industry’s requirements of kauri in the light of recent statements on Waipoua, including those of the Commissioner of Slate Forests (Mr Skinner).
