APPROVE OLYMPIC POOL MEMORIAL
SUPPORT ior the proposal to establish an Olympic swimming pool as a war memorial in Whangarei was accorded at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night.
j It was recommended that the scheme include the erection of a community hall in the vicinity of the baths which, it was considered, should be constructed in the vicinity of Central Park.
Apathy among members was eriuciserl by the executive. The secretary (Mr J. R. McHrajth) reported that 141 circulars submitting the chamber’s request for comment had been dispatched and only 28 had been returned. Seven had been against the scheme and 21 in favour of it. KENSINGTON I'Altjv SCHEME Six alternative proposals were suggested by members. Most comprehensive of these visualised the removal of the racecourse from Kensington Park to a site outside of town and the formation at Kensington of comprehensive sports grounds including tennis courts, bowling greens, tracks for field athletics and provisions for cricket and football. Another member suggested the erection of a clock tower for the town, while yet another proposed that some of the money collected should be used to establish scholastic bursaries for the children of servicemen. “Baths are a necessity for every child," said Mr J. F. Johnson. It was vital that every person should be able ] to swim. j In his opinion there was no better i site than the one mentioned—Central Park. I
Plans, specifications and costs adopted by the borough council are to be accepted as being advisable.
These recommendations are to be forwarded to the provisional war memorial planning committee of the council for consideration by a public meeting.
Mr W. L. McKinnon presided.
