Farewell Waipoua!
(Dedicated to Hon. C. F. Skinner). I’m a Minister, so I should know Just how to make a forest grow, For Nature has no points on me When cutting down a kauri tree. We’ve theorists here throughout the land Who think they know, no doubt; But I’m convinced they do not know Just what they talk about. They’re experts, too, who’ve studied plants, But they’re from overseas. They do not know WE lead the world, They know less about our trees. My officers have all agreed To the felling, and amounts. If I and they are satisfied That’s all that really counts. The public, too, would question me— They’re getting over-bold. I thought by now they’d realised They’ll do just what they’re told. They forget we’re on the box seat now, And although we’re nearly through, We mean to chop Waipoua if It’s the last damned thing we do! WALLIE HALES, Herekino.
