Drugs Seized, Troops Arrested
I (Rec. 2 p.m.) JERUSALEM. Mar. 6. ! A British sergeant and an army lorry driver are under close arrest following the seizure of £40.000 worth of opium and hashish from an army lorry carrying the British Combined Services Entertainments Unit from Palestine to Egypt. Two others, including a woman member of the same unit, are detained in Egypt and are expected to be brought to Palestine to stand trial for complicity in drug smuggling. The opium and hashish were accidentally found concealed in a load of stage props when military police were investigating a road smash. It is believed the discovery put the authorities on the track of one of the ‘biggest drug rings in the Middle East.
