Bookie Convicted After Car Crash
(Special) HAMILTON, This Day. When a car crashed into a shop ; window at Hamilton East on Februaiy > 17 the police found £l6O in notes and silver and a large quantity of betting material inside the vehicle. The driver. Alexander Downie, tobacconist, pleaded guilty before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., to a charge of carrying on the business of a book-Senior-Detective W. R. Murray said defendant received concussion and head injuries in the accident. Mr Johnson, who appeared for defendant, said he was a cripple, and could not carry on an ordinary occupation. It was true he had been previously convicted. The magistrate said that normally imprisonment followed a fourth conviction for bookmaking, but in the circumstances defendent would be fined £250. the same amount as was imposed the last time he was before the court.
