Record Demand For Milk At Whangarei
A RECORD demand for milk has occurred at Whangarei during the past week. Consumption has risen to about 1300 gallons daily. During January the demand* was comparatively light, being affected by the fact that schools were closed and many residents were still away on holidays.
With the reopening of schools and <> the return of holiday-makers, con- j sumption has risen steadily, while | warm temperatures have resulted in increased trade for milk bars, where milk shakes are being sold in great numbers. Whangarei schools are being.supplied with about 100 gallons daily. 1 Fifty gallons are sent to Portland . each day, owing to a shortage in the 1 usual source of supply for the town- 5 ship. c The Whangarei Coop. Milk Producers' Association has recently taken j c steps to ensure the continuation of an j f adequate supply for the town and milk j 1 is being obtained from additional farms in order to cope with the heavy I demand. ■ The position is not as severe as last ] year, when rationing became neces- 1 sary owing to greatly reduced production through drought conditions, 1 but rain is urgently needed if the gen- c eral production decline is to be £ slowed down. ’
