(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Spontaneous applause followed a remark made at the Parliamentary reception to the American athletes yesterday by the American Minister to New Zealand (Mr A. Warren) that he hoped the day was not far distant when New Zealanders were provided with facilities for their athletes comparable with those afforded their racehorses. Mr Warren went on to say that the new racetrack at Trentham was as good as anything he had seen in the world.
He would like to see the same trouble taken over running tracks for athletes. Tracks of cinders should be laid out in the Dominion and every opportunity taken to provide New Zealand athletes with amenities comparable with those at the disposal of athletes elsewhere. Each of the three American athletes i spoke. Fulton said he had been particularly J impressed by the interest taken by the ! officials in the athletic activities of j New Zealanders under the age of j 15, but he said no boy under 15 should ever compete in a race over 50 yards, i .• In New Zealand he had known j youngsters to be raced in road events over two and three miles.
