Suggests Park Of Trees As Memorial
An elevated park, planted with trees, each to be named after a deceased serviceman, is another suggestion for the proposed Whangarei war memorial.
The proposal is made by Mrs A. E. Peat, of Kauri, in a letter to the Provisional War Memorial Planning Committeee.
During a world tour just before the recent war, Mrs Peat states, she visited many war memorials. That which would always stand out in her memory was the memorial at Perth, West Australia.
iSituated in a high position overlooking the Swan River, the park had been planted with trees, each in honour of a serviceman who had fallen in the 1914-18 war.
Now the trees were fully grown and with the area laid out in paths and provided with seats, it was an ideal memorial, keeping evergreen the memory of the fallen. At the foot of each tree was a slab on which was printed the name of the serviceman in honour of whom it had been planted. This is the fifth suggestion received by the committee. Other proposals were for a pensioners’ home, a municipal swimming bath, development of a sports ground on the Hihiahua Reclamation and the laying out of land below Bank Street as a park. The committee is inviting suggestions from individuals and organisations, Saturday March 15 having been fixed as the closing day.
