'Please Explain' About Paracels
(Rec. 2 p.m.) NANKING, Jan. 22. The Foreign Minister (Mr Wang Shih Cheih) asked for an explanation of French military activity in the Chinese-adminstered Paracel Islands, south-east of Hainan.
According to the official Chinese Government organ the Central Daily News, Mr Wang received the French Ambassador three days ago after learning that French troops had landed from a warship on Patoa Island, which is one of the Paracels. The Ambassador said the landing was ordered by the French Government. The newspaper quoted a French Embassy source as saying that sovereignty of the Paracels was unsettled, but France attached little importance to the matter. The French landing was merely for the purpose of learning if Chinese troops were occupying the islands. The Paracels lie 300 miles east of Indo-China. The Chinese occupied the islands after Japan’s surrender. Chinese Government officials say history and geography support China’s claims to the Paracels.
