Kamo Red Letter Day

We offer our congratulations to the Kamo Town Board and the people of Kamo and liie immediate district upon their nossession of an ample water supply, the official turning-on of which took place this afternoon. Today's function marked the culmination of lengthy investigation and negotiation which have led to spring water being stored in a. big reservoir the height of which allows of a serviceable pressure for firefighting purposes no less than for domestic needs.

Kamo, it has long been recognised, is destined to become a closely built and popular suburb of Whangarei Borough, of which it will probably be a component part in the course of time.

In the days • when Whangarei was in the infant stages of development, Kamo was a busy industrial centre, its coal and other mineral deposits being responsible for the presence of a substantial population. Then came a long period not so prosperous, due to a combination of reasons, but always there was held

the conviction that Kamo would some day become an important adjunct of Whangarei. Despite discouragements, there has occurred steady if slow development, until today Kamo has como into its own. and promises to expand to big dimensions. One factor which militated against the faster growth of Kamo as a residential area was the absence of a water supply. The elevation of the town, a most desirable feature which is envied by communities in lowlying areas, made difficult the establishment of any gravitation scheme. However, the discovery of a local spring and the building of a reservoir on a high point, have made possible the provision of a water supply which must enhance Kamo’s claims as a residential and industrial centre.

The coming of a water supply may be expected to foreshadow the installation of a comprehensive sewerage and drainage scheme at au opportune time. Again we offer our congratulations to the district and its people and express a sincere wish that Kamo’s progress may be uninterrupted.
