N.Z. Swimmer Wins NSW Championship (Rec. 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY. This Day. The former champion Gwen Millard had to be assisted from the North Sydney. Olympic Pool last night after she had made a plucky bid to head the New Zealand* champion Ngaire Lane in the women’s 110 yard backstroke championship of New South Wales.. Near the finish she strained a leg muscle and this and general exhaustion caused her collapse. Miss Lane was among those whassisted her from the pool. The New Zealander gave a great display. Her time of 82 l-ssec. was 6.2 sec better than last year’s winning time. Miss Millard, who was returning to competitive swimming after an absence of four years, led over the first length, but after the turn, the New Zealander moved ahead.
