Control Of Pests
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry), discussing the need for wild animal pest control measures as an integral part in the prevention of soil erosion, today deprecated the suggestion that, while the destruction of deer was being more or less satisfactorily attended to. not so much was being done regarding the destruction of goats, chamois and thar. The Minister said that to date 6061 chamois, 4853 thar and 681000 goats had been destroyed. The operations had been systematically extended to new areas. The departmental hunters had also destroyed 4455 wild pigs and 1117 wild sheep. Mr Parry added that scientific investigation was now being made into the habits of the opossum, including all possible means of its destruction or control, as well as the economic aspect as represented by the animal’s fur value. The findings of this investigation would be published as soon as possible.
