Maoris Are To Play In S. Africa
(Spec.) NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. The best New Zealand team available will be chosen to tour South Africa in 1948, irrespective of the colour bar, according to a statement maed by Mr J. Prenderville at a dinner to the Australian and TaranakiKing Country teams. Mr Prenderville is travelling temporarily with the Australian team in its North Island tour on behalf of the New Zealand Rugby Union until Mr T. S. Morrison takes over again. When Mr Prenderville made this statement both teams cheered, a gesture which could be taken as a tribute to the part played by the Maoris in the war and to their splendid services to Dominion Rugby. When the first Springboks toured New Zealand in 1921 they played an all-Maori team at Napier. The next Springbok team in 1937 did not play an all-Maori side, but Maori players were included in several teams they met. No Maori players were taken with the All Blacks who toured South Africa in 1928.
