Farmworkers' Pay

The British Central Agricultural Wages Board has decided to recommend an increase in the weekly minimum wages for agricultural workers by 10/- to £4 for men and £3 for women.

Experts estimate that England's farmworkers' wages may be increased thereby in total bv over £20.000.000. The proposal will now go to the County Wages Committees. The proposed increase is a result of the representations of the Farmworkers’ Unions who originally asked for a £4/10/- minimum. It was opposed by the farmers. Independent members of the board decided the issue.

In an explanatory statement on the decision issued by the board reference is made to the considerable worsening in the world food situation and the necessity for maximum possible production in Britain, and of securing an adequate labour supply.
