Whangarei Dairy Output Down; Little Rain Last Night

The output of the Whangarei Dairy Company for the season up to the end of the year showed a decline of 51 tons on that for the same.period last year. More than half of this disparity was recorded in December, which gives a true reflection of the effect of the drought on dairy production. The company's make last month was 412 tons, as against 442 in December, 1944, a difference of 90 tons. The season’s figures were 1727 compared with 1778 for 1944. MAUNOATUROTO ALSO DOWN December production by the Maungaturoto Dairy Company declined by 24 tons compared with 1944. Last month the factory turned out 246 tens as against 270 tons in December, 1944. For the season to date, the company’s output is 29 tons clown on that for the corresponding period a year ago. The total manufactured is 1095 tons, against 1124. .COIN. YESTERDAY The oppressive heat yesterday was followed last evening by electrical disturbances and to the south of Whangarei quite a bright display of lightning was seen between 9 and 10 p.m. In the early hours of this morning light rain fell, but it was not sufficient, to do any material good. The topsoil in gardens was very slightly dampened. and pastures and plants would not derive any benefit from the meagre offering. Before dark last evening, one or two acceptable showers came down, but. these did little more than wet window sills. The total registered rainfall for the 24 hours 1o eight o'clock this morning was only ,66in. The sky was heavily overcast rill morning, but the weather was still, in the southerly quarter, and despite humidity, could not be counted on to alleviate the drought to any appreciable extent
