Indian Officers* Sentence Remitted
(Rec. 2.15 p.m.) NEW DELHI, Jan. 3. General Auchinleck hemitted the sentence of transportation for life passed by a court martial oiv three members of the Indian National Army, Shahnawazkhan, Saighal and Dhijlon, and confirmed sentences of cashiering and forfeiture of arrears of pay and allowances. The officers were released.
The trio tonight visited Asaf Ali, member of the Congress working committee who was one of the defence counsel at the trial, with other members of the working committee and I.N.A. defence committee.
A large crowd cheered and garlanded the freed men as they left the building hi which the meeting was held and hoisted them on top of a car for speeches. They said “our release is a victory for the country. We gave a pledge that our lives were dedicated to the cause of India’s freedom. That pledge still stands.” ; . i
