Dentistry Chair At Otago University

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day The appointment of Dr. J. P. Walsh to the chair of dentistry at the University of Otago has been approved by the University Council. The appointment was made necessary by the resignation of Dr. R. B. Dodd’s. Dr. Walsh is at present a medical officer in the Royal Australian Air Force stationed at Adelaide and consulting dental surgeon to the R.A.A.F. in South Australia. He was born in Melbourne. By. attending night classes while working as a dental mechanic he completed the matriculation for dental science and medicine, and took a dental course at the University of Melbourne, obtaining honours in all subjects.

He graduated in 1936 with first-class final ‘honours and distinction in eight subjects, a record which was without precedent in the history of the Melbourne Dental School. In 1939 he commenced a private practice in Melbourne and during that time he took a medical course,'graduating as bachelor of medicine, and bachelor of surgery in 1943. He was

then appointed to the resident medical

staff of the Alfred Hospital, one of the main medical teaching hospitals' in Melbourne.

Dr. Walsh is 34 years of age and is ! married, with four children. It is expected that he will take up his appointment early in the new year. He was chosen for the position from 20 applicants from England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Eire and the United States, • *
