British To Carry Arms In Berlin

BERLIN, December 20

British Army and civilian car drivers from yesterday must carry arms and ammunition in the streets of Berlin after 9 p.m., and an armed escort must accompany -women drivers.

The Hamburg radio reported that the Berlin police swooped on night clubs in Berlin last night and arrested 300 persons, many of whom were already wanted for a variety of offences.

Large quantities of black market meat, eggs, wine and spirits were found.

Berlin’s crime record has improved rapidly since the summer. There were only 56 murders in November, compared with 123 in July. Cases of rape which were reported declined from 598 in July to eight in November. Theft, particularly armed robbery, however, has increased. Large-scale looting has declined considerably.
