No Donation For Harbour Bridge

Although councillors generally' supported the proposal to erect a bridge over the WaitOmata Harbour, the Wha-ngarei-Borough Council, could not see its way clear to contribute to the funds L of \hp ;*■ Harbour Bridge Association. ■ r

Moving that a donation of £5/5/- be made, Cr. H. W. James said that a bridge would be of great advantage to the whole of Northland. Seconding, pro forma, Cr. S. i J. Snow supported the erection of a bridge but said that it should be undertaken on a national basis as also should the inquiry into the heed for such a* bridge. Funds for the purpose should be provided by the Government, claimed Cj. Snow. A note of warning was sounded by the Mayor (Mr W. Jones), when he said that any donation would have to come from the unauthorised expenditure account and that account was. already largely committed.

“The chances are that the whole of the North would be rated for the bridge, if it were built,” said Mr Jones. The motion that a donation be made was defeated.
