Offer By Ford Not Acceptable To Union

- DETROIT, December 18. The Ford Company offered the United Automobile Makers a 15 cents hourly increase, effective when production reaches 80,000 vehicles lyThe company said the increase was 12 2/5 per cent, over Ford’s present average wage, and approximately 22 per cent, over the average wage of major competitors. “Theoretically, we could ask the Government to raise ceiling prices to cover the wage increase, but it would be unwise to go on that road at present, because of the Government policy based on the belief that only rigid adherence to ceiling prices would prevent inflation.” the company said. “That puts the problem up to Ford. We have no alternative but to I take a step involving 33.000,000 dol- ! lars in extra wages.”

The company made the offer subject to certain considerations. Involving the elimination of unauthorised stoppages, of work and a reduction in the number of union committeemen.

The U.A.W. spokesman said Ford’s offer was completely unacceptable to the union.
