(Rec, noon.) LONDON, Dec. 19 John Amery, self-confessed traitor, and son of a lather who has rendered distinguished service to Britain, was hanged at 9 a.m. today at Wandsworth Prison.
An earlier message said Mr L. S. Amery, former Secretary of State for India, arrived at the House of Commons last night with a bundle of letters in an llth-hour effort to save his son, due to be executed for treason this morning, according to the “Daily Mirror.” «
Each letter contained an appeal to the Cabinet to use its influence to gain a reprieve for John Amery, less on legal grounds than on the state of his health.
It was Mr Amery’s first visit to the House of Commons since his defeat in the general election. He stayed only long enough to hand over the letters, which, according to the “Daily Mirror,” he asked should be delivered by special messenger.
Mr Amery then went to pay his last visit to his son in the condemned cell.
At the inquest, a pathologist, Dr. Cedric Simpson, said a post-mortem revealed that Amery had no disease of any kind. The coroner: I have read that Amery was supposed to have had consumption.
Witness: He had no disease of the lungs whatever.
The jury returned a verdict of judicial hanging;
