Urges Road Users To Exercise Utmost Care
In an appeal for safe use of the road during the holidays, the Commissioner for Transport (Mr. G. L. Laurenson) urges motorists not to make a hurried last-minute rush to reach their destinations before Christmas.
He quotes last year when Christmas Day fell on a Monday, and the highway traffic was distributed fairly evenly from Friday afternoon throughout the whole of Saturday and Sunday. Traffic was leisurely and orderly; consequently the work of the traffic officers was made much easier, and accidents .were very rare. “All members of the Transport Department’s traffic staff will be working long hours on the road througn- ! cut the holiday period,” continued the Commissioner. “These officers are not out to catch offending drivers; their job is to facilitate the smooth and orderly flow of traffic and to assist in maintaining safe conditions. “I would remind all road users, whether pedestrians, cyclists or motor drivers, that they are personally responsible for their own safety and the safety of others on the road. This safety can be achieved only through the constant care and courtesy which is exercised by each and every person using the road.”
