Whangarei Girls’ Choir

The Baptist Church Hall was filled to capacity last evening for the annual break-up of the Whangarei Girls’ Choir.

This was the final programme of a successful year’s work under the tuition and baton of Mrs B. Cook. Parents and friends were invited and a very enjoyable .evening was held. Solos were sung by Misses Ellen Towers, Margaret Fyfe, June Dudding, Margaret Hill, P. Johnson and Miss Doreen Keyte sang with violin obligato. Pianoforte pieces were rendered by Misses Doreen Crawshaw and Margaret Cheesman. A trio, the Misses Keyte and Wordsworth, sang “Aloha Oe.” Violin solos were played by Mr L. Wordsworth; a violin duet was rendered by Miss Mavis Keyte and Mr L. Wordsworth, and a recitation was given by Miss Margaret Claris. NOVELTY ITEMS Novelty items for the evening were also well received. Miss June Dudding presented humorous numbers; a dumb play, called “The Family Photograph,” was presented by Misses Keyte and Dudding; three of the young people acted a small playette, and Miss Mavis Keyte gave a drawing exhibition, using both hands at the same time. The choir presented some fine numbers, entitled: “The Wind at Night,” “Movin’ Along,” “Grandfather’s Clock,” “Bells of the Sea,” “To Sing Awhile,” “Steal Away to Jesus” and “Silent Night.” Following the programme, words of appreciation were said by Rev. E. F. Sherburd. Miss Doreen Keyte, on behalf of the choir, presented Mrs Cook with a sheath of gladiolas, carnations and roses for the splendid work she had put in for the choir during the year. Supper was served by choir members.
