EUPATORIUM ATTACKS ONNEW FRONT While overseas enemies have been the target, a foe on the home front has been winning by default. Eupatorium, or the “Mexican Devil Weed,” which was the subject of much unfavourable publicity shortly before the war, has been creeping up Northland gullies, strangling pasture and forming an almost impenetrable barrier, on the edges of byshes. In the Kiripaka district, particularly, it has invaded several properties and is becoming firmly established in several stands of bush. Fortunately, the H. W. Crawford Memorial Bush, which is a reserve, is so far free of the menace. Latest area to be affected is that lying between Whangarei and Cnerahi. Last year one patch was observed on the roadside; now there are quite a number of healthy clumps, all in full flower. One particularly 'fine specimen flourishes at the foot of Sherwood Rise. Cnee the weed, which is on the noxious weeds schedule, is firmly established, eradication is most difficult. * To' many farmers eupatorium is becoming all too familiar; others, who may wish to identify their enemy may do so by studying a plant which has long been growing on Whangarei Borough Council property on Harrison's Hill.
