REMEMBER THE LEPERS

NEW ZEALANDERS are aware of the great Christian work which is being done on Makogai, where lepers from Pacific islands and'other territory are given treatment which in many cases has restored them to health and, in. every case, has provided mitigation of the ravages of the terrible disease and given the sufferers comfort which could not have obtained elsewhere. It is perhaps not so widely known in New Zealand that there exists another great mission for lepers in a wider field. This is the Mission to Lepers founded in London in 1874, though, as has been said, the foundation of the society goes back to a day, nearly 2000 years ago, when there came a leper to Jesus, beseeching cleansing. From small beginnings, the work of the mission has been carried by devoted men and women to India, Africa., China, Korea, to mention only some fields, where countless millions of people are ravaged by leprosy. But for the work of those who have undertaken a great humanitarian work in the spirit of service, hosts of unfortunate sufferers would have been condemned to misery until death released them.. It is impossible to tabulate what missions to lepers the world over have done for those who, without the self-sacrifice of helpers, would have remained outcast and sorrow-crushed souls. The Whangarei Happiness Club is conducting a street collection to assist funds for carrying on this great work. The call of the leper will doubtless meet with a whole-hearted response tomorrow.
