Russell Bakehouse Destroyed By Fire

fSpecial) RUSSELL, This Day. Fire last night totally destroyed the bakehouse operated by Mr G. T. Forbes. The cause is unknown. The outbreak was discovered at about 10.30 o'clock •: and residents were informed by the Post Office exchange, enabling a bucket brigade to be formed, but the fire had too strong a hold to allow the buliding to be saved. Fortunately, an easterly wind prevented the flames from spreading and the oldest bank building in New Zealand, adjoining, was saved. The hotel and a drapery stoi’e were at one time threatened. A lean-to shed con-} taining oils and paints was also savedthe contents being removed. When the baker, Mr Charles Knowles, left earlier in the evening, everything was in order and it is not known how the fife originated. Insurances on the building were with the South British Company. The contents were also insured, but Mr Forbes will be a loser as good stocks of flour and meal were held. Alternative arrangements for bread supplies are being made. During the fire welcome cups of tea were supplied to the fire-fighters from the Duke of Marlborough Hotel.
