Alleges Speed Of Taxis Dangerous

Attention of the Whangarei Borough Council is to be drawn to the allegedly dangerous speed of taxis in the borough. Decision to write to the council drawing its attention to the speed of taxis was made by the Ratepayers’ Association meeting last night. The subject was introduced by Mr F. V. Powell, who alleged that the northern end of Fourth Avenue from Central Avenue to Rust Lane was a “regular speed track.” Other offenders were truck drivers some of whom drove their vehicles at 40 m.p.h. down the straight. “Taxis are notorious for speeding,” Mr T. G. Hirons pointed out. The acting-chairman (Mr H. Beehre) said that Senior TrafficInsnector C. C. Davenport was expected to attend the next meeting of the association and deliver an address on borough traffic by-laws, and he suggested that the offence should be brought to his notice. Only that night, Mr T. M. Conaghan said, he had seen a taxi speeding along Lupton Avenue at not less than 50 m.p.h. It was decided to draw the attention of the borough council to the complaints.
