Smashing through savage Japanese resistanee, Australian and Netherlands East Indies troops on Tarakan, off Borneo, hay* captured the ' rich Pamoesian oilfielc around Tarakan town. The Australian; had previously captured most of the town They are now firmly astride the airfield an objective of prime importance. The Japanese defended the Pamoesiar oilfield by firing down on the invader; from the top of steel derricks and from tunnels in the steep sides of Tarakan hill A veteran Associated Press war correspondent, Spencer Davis, says the fighting was among the most bitter of the Southwest Pacific war. . ... General Blarney, who is conferring with General MacArthur in Manila, said the Japanese, apparently decided that the Tarakan oilfields Were of little use tc them because of the Allied blockade, Their destruction of the field had been most severe and they were apparently fighting merely a delaying campaign.
