Turkey.—Turkey has decided to prolong for a further six months the state of martial law in Istanbul and Thrace.
Mutineers.—A court-martial sentenced to death three members of the crew of a Greek destroyer, which jpined in a recent mutiny. Seven others were sentenced to hard labour for periods of between five and 20 years. Six were acquitted.
Tribute. — President Roosevelt has sent Marshal Stalin two scrolls dedicated to the cities of Stalingrad and Leningrad, commemorating their heroic defences
“which not only has been an inspiration to the people of the United States, but has served to bind even more closely the friendship of our two nations.” Marshal Stalin has sent a cordial reply. Coinage.—The United States Treasury announced that United States mints have completed a large order of coins for the Netherlands’ Governcent, and begun a second order. Coins will be used after the liberation of Holland and the East Indies. Silver is being lend-leased, but minting costs are paid by the Netherlands, who wanted to purchase outright, but the United States desires to retain the title to the silver. Eventually the coins will be melted and returned.
R.N.Z. Navv.—Paymaster Capt. (Acting W. J. c. Prophit. 0.8. E., Royal Navy, who recently arrived in the Dominion for a third term of duty with the Royal New Zealand Navy, will assume the office of Naval Secretary and member of the New Zealand Naval Board on July 1, 1344, in place of Paymaster Captain N. H. Beall, 0.8. E., Royal Navy, who will be returning to the United Kingdom shortly.
