With the first news of the opening of the second front in the west, coining as it did from German sources, telephones were • .if.ijg freely in Whangarei last nigh’., when friend was talking to friend and discussing the news, the great question being, “Was it true?”
This question was soon answered by the announcement from Allied headquarters, and then all wh r possibi/ could, listened in to New Zealand stations or the BBC for the latest from the invasion front. At meetings held in Whangarei last night, the news was freely discussed, but as so few facts had come through most of the discussion was conjecture. This morning.
“Invasion” is the main talk of the town, and all are interested in the latest news, news that is now coming through, enaoling a clearer picture of the tremendous undertaking to be grasped.
By courtesy of the “Northern Advocate” the news of the opening of the invasion was giver, to patrons at the Whangarei theatres last night, the Regent furnishing a bulletin through the microphone, while the Plaza flashed the tidings on the screen.
