Whangarei Lead To N.Z. On Peace Day
Probably the first local body in New Zealand to put in hand preparations for the celebration of the day of peace is the Whangarei Borough Council. At the monthly meeting last night the Mayor (Mr. W. Jones) expressed the opinion that the council should begin to prepare for the day of peace. Although some might consider such a move premature, he thought that it was time for the foundation for peace celebrations to be laid and said that he would like Whangarei to do as it always had done—to carry out celebrations with credit to the town and the occasion. To do the work properly it was necessary to prepare plans which could be put into operation in a short time.
The Mayor moved that the question should be referred to the recentlyformed jubilee committee of the council and the town clerk (Mr. L. O. Hall). In seconding the motion the chairman of the jubilee committee (Cr. D. L. Ross) expressed his pleasure at such a move being made and said that the time was not too soon.
Commending the Mayor on looking ahead, Cr R. J. N. Crosby said that 'everybody was looking forward to the day of peace, and Whangarei people would want the celebrations to be carried out in a thorough manner. The motion was carried.
