Mangonui Rugby
(Special) KAiTAiA, I his Day. The third series of matches for the Mangonui Rugby Union championship was continued on Saturday cn heavy grounds.
Kaitaia defeated their old rivals, Awanui, by the handsome margin of 19—G. Sixteen points in arrears at half-time, Awanui appeared outclassed, but, playing with determination and dash, scored more than their opponents during the second spell—a try and a penalty goal to a try. Winning most of the ball from both lineouts and scrums, Kaitaia had a decided advantage. Southwell, their hooker, a new arrival from the University Club. Auckland. is a specialist, besides being a very solid, hard-working forward. For the winners. Ike Harrison, F. Richter. J. Wright. H. Jamieson and M. Werner scored tries. Harrison converted two. Matthew secured Awanui’s only try, and C. Blythe kicked a penalty goal.
Tlie other senior fixture, at Ahipara, resulted in another win for Air Force byeight points to Rarawa’s three. It was a mud scramble from start to finish, with the result in doubt until the final whistle. Rarawa. in fact, were unlucky. They crossed the line twice in succession, but the tries were disallowed. For Raravva, Parateno played an out ■ standing game and scored their only try. Mr. Stone refereed.
In the junior curtain-raiser at Kaitaia. the Young People’s Club won easily by £0 points to three. The winner’s score was compiled by J. Beasley, B. Morpeih an:l A. Pivac, with two tries each.
