Next-Of-Kin Receive Bravery Awards

Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Newall received privately at Auckland recently the immediate relatives of a number of deceased service personnel resident, in the Auckland district, when His Excellency handed to the next-of-kin the decorations mentioned below:— Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar. —Dr. and Mrs S. H. Ward, of Whangarei, parents of the late SquadronLeader D. li. Ward, R.A.F. Military Medal. —Mrs M. A. Lockett, of Ghacawai, widow of Warrant-Offi-cer (Second-Class) A. H. Lockett, Second N.Z.E.F. The citation for Squadron-Leader Ward’s bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross in May, 1942, stated that one night he led a formation of fighters against the Barce aerodrome in Libya. He shot down a large aeroplane approaching the aerodrome. Warrant-Officer Lockett was decorated for bravery in the campaign in Greece. He was reported missing in the campaign in Crete and his death in action was later presumed.
