That death was due to asphyxia caused by complications following child-birth, was the verdict given by the district, coroner (Mr. J. G. Draper) in an inquest into the death of Papa Herewith, a day-old Maori female child.
Evidence was given by the mother, Puti Herewith, of Pipiwai. that on Saturday she had given birth to the child at her home. There had been no difficulty ai. the. time of the birth, at which her husband had assisted. The child was small and some time after birth site moaned occasionally. On awakening at 3 p.m. on Sunday witness had found the child was dead. Dr. C. L. G. Cook, of Hikurangi, said that as a result of his examination of the body and of the facts stated to him by the mother, he was of the opinion that death had been due to asphyxia, brought on by the umbilical cord being’ around the child’s neck and membrane over the open mouth. In his opinion everything possible, with the facilities at hand, had been carried out. to the best of their ability by those concerned in the delivery and after cave of the child.
