Whangarei Naval Man Commended For Courage In Action

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Governor-General announces that His Majesty the King has approved the following awards to members of the Royal New Zealand Navy:— Distinguished Service Cross Commander Stephen Wentworth Roskill, Royal Navy, England. Commander Roskill joined the Royal New Zealand Navy on loan from the Royal Navy on September 17, 1941. Mr Victor Edward Bull (England), Commissioned Engineer in the Royal Navy. He was lent to the R.N.Z.N. in 1928, 1932 and 1937. Distinguished Service Medal Chief Electrical Artificer William Robert Joseph Jones (Auckland). Chief Shipwright, John Weir Stewart (now Temporary-Acting Warrant Shipwright, Royal New Zealand Navy), of Auckland. Stoker Petty Officer Albert Fickling, of Auckland. Master-at-Arms Thomas Eric Tolerton, of Auckland. Mentioned in Despatches The following have been mentioned in despatches: Captain Cecil Aubrey Lawson Mansergh, D.S.C., Royal Navy (Surrey, England); Acting-Commander (E) Brian Ussher Alcock, R.N. The award is for courage and devotion to duty in action. Northland Distinction Born in Whangarei, Norman Craven, a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Craven, of Otaika Road, Whangarei, was educated at the Hora Hora primary school and the Whangarei High School. A keen tennis player and athlete, he worked prior to the outbreak of war ki J. W. Court’s, Ltd., Whangarei. In 1940 he was called up for territorial service and remained on guard duty until enlisting in the Navy about two years ago. He is about 22 years old.
