Sheep Dog Trials Held At Broadwood
(Special; BROADWOOD, This Day. In lovely surroundings of native bush and under a summer sky. the best attendance for many years witnessed the 1944 Broadwood Sheep Dog Trials. Held in Mr G. Irvine’s “Rockfield” property, the trials attracted 45 entries. The trials were controlled by the Northland Centre executive of the North Island Dog Trial Association. Mr Jim White, of Okaihau, acted as judge, while Mr H. Mansbridge, of Broadwood. was timekeeper. Wethers for the trials were lent by Mr Kos Newman. Catering was well organised by ladies of the Broadwood Red Cross Committee.
A short head, drive and yard competition resulted as follows: — P. G. L. Mackenzie’s “Dugald,” 54 pis.. 1: G. Irvine’s “Jean.” 48 pis.. 2: G. Irvine's “Jock," 47-J pts., 3: A. Buchanan’s “Jean.” 4. A trophy awarded in this event by Mr E. Kingdon was won by A. Buchanan’s “Jean.” The driving competition resulted: — P. G. L. Mackenzie’s “Lofty Blomfield,” 43 pts. 1; P. G. L. Mackenzie’s “Dugald.” 42 pts., 2; G. Anderson’s “Jeff.” 41 pts. 3; A. Buchanan’s “Jean,” 40f pts., 4. In this event a trophy presented by Mr A. Duncan was won by A. Buchanan's “Jean.”
