N.Z. Ship's Engineer Torpedoed 6 Times

(Special) LONDON, March 15. To be torpedoed six times during this war is the unenviable record of Chief Engineer E. Suckling (Hawke’s Bay). He was badly injured when his ship was torpedoed last year, his left leg being fractured in five places but, despite being 28 days in a lifeboat, he reached Flores in the Azores safely. The New Zealand trade union leader (Mr Arthur Cook, M.L.C.) was lost when the same ship sank. Mr Suckling last saw him on a raft in heavy seas. Mr Cook gave Mr Suckling a personal message to Mr Fraser, which he is hoping to deliver as soon as he returns to New Zealand. He is now able to walk with the aid of two sticks.

Mr Suckling was torpedoed in two British vessels and then in three different American ships.
