China Front Fighting
LONDON, March 15,
Medium bombers and long-range fighters of the 14th Air Force on Monday bombed Kiungshan aerodrome and a seaplane anchorage on Hainan Island, says General StilwelFs communique. Five of 12 intercepting Japanese fighters were shot down and three others probably destroyed on the ground. Fighter-bombers also hit an important railway bridge at Puchi, in East Central China. One American plane is missing from these operations. Two waves of Japanese bombers raided the Allied air base of Suichwan, Kiangsi Province, without causing damage. Ten Japanese bombers attacked and slightly damaged an aerodrome at Hengyang, Hunan Province.
Chinese despatches report the recapture of Helingkwan, or Black Dragon Pass, strategic gateway to Southwestern Shansi Province which the Japanese have held for six years. The Chinese now are able to extend military activity north-eastward into Shansi.
