Trees Menace To Awanui River Shipping
(Special) KAITAIA, This Day. At a short meeting' of the Awanui Harbour Board, the Harbour Master (Mr Tom Walker) reported that during the storm of last month four trees .had blown over into the river. These luckily were small and had not interfered with shipping. They had now been removed. He drew the board’s attention lo tlie facl that on one property there wove several taller trees that were likely to be a danger, and if they fell in the river would block it entirely. “If they prevented the passage of some ship with a cargo of butter and no refrigeration plant there would be a fine how-de-do.” warned the harbour master. He asked that the owner of the trees be given no.tice to remove them. The owner was willing to do so; but under new regulations could not without permission. The chairman (Mr L. Matthews) said that the next step was the formation work for the road leading to the wharf. There was a fairly high bank to be levelled and hollows to fill. A bulldozer would bo required. A committee consisting of Messrs Matthews, Holder and Steed was appointed to visit the property and have the necessary work done.
