Hitler Wages War On All Churches-Roosevelt
WASHINGTON, March 15,
“Everyone knows the Nazi record on religion. Hitler has followers, both at home and abroad, who have waged ruthless war against the churches of all faiths. Now the Germans have used the holy city of' Rome as a military centre, no one could have been surprised by it. It is only the latest of Hitler’s many affronts to religion. It is a logical step in Nazi policy of total war —a policy which treats nothing as sacred.”
This statement was made by President Roosevelt at a Press conference. Mr. Roosevelt added: “We on our side have made freedom of religion one of the principles for which we are fighting this war. We have tried scrupulously, often at considerable sacrifice, to spare religious and cultural monuments. We shall continue to do so.” This statement is regarded as President Roosevelt’s reply to the Pope’s appeal to belligerents to spare Rome.
