Last Suicide Attack
WASHINGTON, March 15. Fifteen Japanese suicide attacks on Bougainville Island were the last desperate attempts to drive the Americans off the island, said the Secretary for War (Colonel Knox). He indicated clearly his confidence that Japanese efforts would fail. Although the enemy attack had beer, well organised, the Japanese had lost heavily, wheras American losses had been small. Colonel Knox showed interviewers scale models oi Japanese barges. more than 1150 cl which have now been destroyed by the American navy and air forces.
He said the Japanese had been made desperate by their shipping losses. and were now using these small craft originally intended for invasion purposes, to carry supplies and reinforcements to their beleaguered garrisons
