Juin.—General Juin, French commander in Italy, is stated in Algiers to be now in charge of a French corps. Under him is a Moroccan division. Torpedoes.—The German radio says that U-boats are now using an automatic torpedo which follows the objective even When a ship takes evasive action. Sunderlands.—The first of a number of Sunderland flying-boats for the R.A.A.F. have arrived in Australia. The Commonwealth Air Minister (Mr Drakeford) has announced that other Sunderlands are on the way. They are manned by Australian airmen from the famous No. 10 Squadron, the- first Dominion unit to go into action in this war. Bengal.—Total deaths from all causes in Bengal for 1943 numbered 1,874,000, 58 per cent above the average for the last five years. Deaths from famine are not separately listed, but are included in the total. Cholera and malaria accounted for nearly half the total deaths. Rugby.—ln a Rugby match, Australian Air Force beat New Zealand Air Force 3—o at Richmond. Prohibited.—Despite repeated warnings that vessels entering specified areas in the North Sea would do so at their own peril, ships occasionally continued to enter prohibited zones, states the Admiralty. Recently it became necessary for action to be taken. A Danish fishing vessel, Aladina, was intercepted by a patrol and the vessel with its crew and fishing gear was brought into a British port. Relief. —The American Red Cross has announced that garments are ready for shipment on neutral Swedish vessels to. Greece via the Mediterranean and will be distributed there by the Swedish and Swiss commission, in co-operation with the International Red Cross.
