U.S. Now Has Fourteen First-Line Carriers

NEW YORK, February 24

The Shangri La, a 27,000-ton air-craft-carrier was launched at Norfolk Navy Yard today, sponsored by Mrs. James Doolittle, wife of the general who led the raid cci Tokio from the carrier Hornet.

The Shangri La is the 11th of the Essex class carriers. It carries over 80 planes. 2000 men, 1G 5-inch guns. The Bennington, another carrier of the same class, is to be launched on Saturday at Brooklyn Navy Yard. The launchings give the United States 14 first-line carriers in addition to nine converted cruiser types and approximately GO escort carriers. The Shangri La cost £16,000,000.
