Firewood For Soldiers’ Families Permission has been granted by the Whangarei County Council for the Whangarei Borough Council to cut firewood on the council's resei’ve situated opposite the Tangihua hall, for the benefit of the dependents of men on active service. The clerk explained that the firewood was being sold by the council at a low rate. County’s Credit Balance. The general fund account of the Whangarei County Council .showed a credit balance of £9040 as on January 21. This was reported to the council today by the acting-treasurer (Mr. G. H. Lloyd). Refunds clue by the Government amounted to £1377. as follows; On a/c ol' highways expenditure, £774, and Government grants, £OO3. The expenditure on main highways up to January 21, 1944. was £5845, of which the council's share was £1407.

Tar-Sealing Request In support of a request to the Whangarei County Council for assistance towards tar-sealing that portion ol' the Waipu Cove road which runs through that centre. Mr A. Y. Provan yesterday forwarded a petition signed by 166 persons, including visitors. Cr. J. H. Garland, while admitting the great advantage of the work, was not prepared to ask the ratepayers of the riding to pay the cost. On his motion it was unanimously agreed to apply lo the Government for a £3 to £1 subsidy lo have the work, which was approximately 12 to 15 chains, carried Gilt.
